Cultural sensitivity and diversity in communication
Raj Thuraisingham, Barts Health NHS Trust, London, United Kingdom
Introduction
This lecture by Raj Thuraisingham deals with cultural sensitivity in communication in a person-centred approach to healthcare. We are increasingly recognising the strong role that culture diversity plays with regards to opportunities and outcomes in the health of our patients. Also as we strive to improve access to transplantation for all, understanding the role of cultural diversity when in comes to communication is paramount. Grouping people together however according to their “perceived” culture risks ignoring their individuality. It suggests that a person-centred approach may be a way of tailoring communication with our patients in the hope of truly understanding their priorities and wishes. With this we hope it will lead to better health care outcomes.Cultural sensitivity and diversity in communication
